Feeling nostalgic! As we drove past our old road, off the highway, to the very first house that Val and I bought together I shared memories with Quin of the time spent in that home and how it was the House that he was born in. He started asking questions about the house and what his room liked. Quin, being his confident little self, went and rang the doorbell to ask if he could see the house. It was really cool to see the changes. They had done everything to the house that Val and I dreamed of doing.
It reminded me of the time in our lives where we felt we had lost everything. The first time we said “we are BROKE”. Val was released from his big league MLB team and 3 weeks later we discovered I was pregnant with Quin. After years of struggling to keep Val’s dream alive we lost most of our money in the stock market and decided to sell everything. Even though we didn’t owe money, we lost money on the house when we sold it because we had put so much down on it.
We sold my car and bought a used one that we could pay for in cash and packed our entire lives into it including our son. We bounced from state to state and city to city driving across the country multiple times. We were living in host families homes. We moved about 13 times before we settled where we are in TX. There were a whole lot of other struggles and challenges, as well as joyful and excited times, along the way including the birth of our daughter, our house fire, career changes, and more.
It’s these humbling reminders that keep me grounded and something that I recommend everyone do from time to time. It takes me back to when we couldn’t pay bills and how depressed I was and overworked and stressed my husband was. I look at our life now. We are financially free with ample savings, happy, carefree, and living our lives the way we want in the moment. We have the ability to offer life experiences to our children and be present in their everyday lives. It’s amazing how far we have come.
I am grateful for this coaching opportunity and what it has done for my family. This journey has not come without struggle but I wouldn’t change a thing. I give all the glory to God.
